INTRODUCCIÓN: la utilización de plantas con fines medicinales para el tratamiento de enfermedades ha ocurrido a lo largo de la historia de la humanidad. La enfermedad más comúnmente diagnosticada en perros es la otitis externa y, por lo tanto, es grande su importancia clínica. OBJETIVO: evaluar la actividad antimicrobiana in vitro de 3 tipos de extractos de las plantas Origanum vulgare L. (orégano) y Thymus vulgaris L. (tomillo), un aceite, una tintura y una decocción, frente a microorganismos asociados con esa enfermedad. The antibacterial potential of leaf's essential oil (EO) from Brazilian pepper tree (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi) against staphylococcal isolates from dogs with otitis externa was evaluated. The minimum inhibitory concentration of EO ranged from 78.1 to 1,250 fg/mL. The oil was analyzed by GC and GC/MS and cytotoxicity tests were carried out with laboratory animals.

Efficacy of Argentine propolis formulation for topical treatment of canine otitis externa Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.

The therapeutic effects of Argentine propolis ear drop formulation on canine otitis externa were evaluated. Forty-eight dogs with symptoms of otitis externa were randomly assigned to double-blinded, controlled clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy of topical formulation with propolis versus a topical placebo in the treatment of otitis externa. The propolis preparation and placebo were administrated into both external ear canals, twice daily for 14 days. Throughout the study, clinical examination and microbiological analysis of dogs ear exudates were made. Identification and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Staphylococcus spp. isolated from canine chronic otitis externa Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.

Swab samples obtained from 96 dogs with chronic otitis externa were cultured for the isolation of Staphylococcus species. Of 57 staphylococcal strains, 41 (72%) were coagulase-negative (CNS). The identification of staphylococci strains was made by standard procedures for the routine identification of staphylococci in clinical practice. S. sciuri was the most frequent species isolated (22.8%) from chronic otitis externa in dogs followed by S. intermedius (12.3%), S. auricularis (10.5%) and S. aureus (8.8%). Three (5.2%) CNS strains could not be identified. Bacterial isolates were susceptible to enrofloxacin, gentamicin, cephalothin, chloramphenicol and neomycin. Resistance was most common to penicillin G, oxacillin and ampicillin.

In vitro antimicrobial resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from canine otitis externa in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil BJM

Isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (167) were obtained from 528 samples of canine otitis externa, identified by biochemical reactions and tested for susceptibility to 10 antimicrobials. The most effective drug was ciprofloxacin. The study reports alarming resistance among P. aeruginosa isolated from canine otitis externa samples in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Several methodologies in molecular biology have been used in the investigation of Malassezia pachydermatis and its differentiation into subtypes. Recent molecular research of this species includes the use of samples isolated from canine otitis externa and dermatitis, as well as from healthy animals, having in view an epidemiological study of the yeast. The aim of this study was to identify molecular differences in M. pachydermatis samples isolated from dogs with otitis externa. The M. pachydermatis strains were analyzed by means of the Random Amplification Primer DNA - Polimerase Chain Reaction (RAPD–PCR) for molecular heterogeneity research.
